DDC Final: What We Learned
Real Salt Lake fell to the Seattle Sounders in the Desert Diamond Cup Final 1-0 Saturday. It was pre-season, but some fans are already beginning to panic. Realistically, what does this result mean for the squad?
There are a couple things we learned for sure:
- The starting attack looks pretty good - It took heroic goalkeeping from Marcus Hahnemann to keep Salt Lake off the board in the first half. Saborio, Findley, Velasquez and Grabavoy created opportunities and put serious pressure on Seattle’s defense. If you play that first half 10 times, Real Salt Lake gets at least one goal in nine of them.
- The defense is worrisome - They made quite a few mistakes. Seattle took advantage of one to get the game winner, but it wasn’t a one-time issue. There were many mistakes that could portend to a rough start to the season if Kwame Watson-Siriboe and Kenny Mansally can’t step up.
- Sebastian Velasquez has taken the next step – I wrote about this earlier this week, but “Seba” is really stepping up for Salt Lake. If he continues to perform at this level, he will be a regular in the lineup this season and a future star for Salt Lake.
